NOTE: These case numbers are based upon our own school information and will be updated at the end of each week for which we are aware of at that present time in the Elk Point-Jefferson School District. These numbers are referring to active cases that would have been inside our school buildings. Due to federal laws such as HIPPA and FERPA, as well as protecting individual privacy no other specific information will be shared.
Parents will not be directly contacted for all positive cases in your child’s building. This article will serve as notifying parents district-wide of a positive case. This document will be updated at the end of each week, for active positive students/staff COVID-19 cases for which we are aware of at the present time in the Elk Point-Jefferson School District. Our School Nurse and Building Principals will directly notify parents if their child is considered a Close Contact due to a positive COVID-19 case in the school district.
As a reminder when you see this weekly update, please remember these students/staff confirmed to be positive COVID-19 cases have already been put into “Isolation” by the South Dakota Department of Health/Health Care Professionals. Any confirmed student/staff Verified Close Contacts associated have already been “Quarantined” by the South Dakota Department of Health/Health Care Professionals
Students/Staff who have a positive individual living in their home will be required to fulfill the quarantine time recommended by the department of health.
Students/Staff who test positive for COVID-19 are required to self-isolate for ten (10) days from the first onset of symptoms and must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications before returning to school. Students who are verified close contacts, within 6 ft. for 15 min. or more, and were wearing a mask at the time of exposure, may remain in school if there are no symptoms and must wear a mask at all times for the remainder of the 14 calendar days. Students who are verified as close contacts and were not wearing a mask at the time of exposure will be required to be out of school and can return after seven (7) calendar days with a negative test and no symptoms. They must wear a mask for the remainder of the 14 days. The unmasked close contact could also return after ten (10) calendar days and no test result and no symptoms. They must wear a mask for the remainder of the 14 days. Full Updated Close Contact Protocols can be found HERE.
Isolation is for people who are already sick with COVID-19 and quarantine is for people who are not sick but may have been exposed to COVID-19. The wearing of masks does not prevent someone from becoming a verified close contact.
You may find out from your family physician or the South Dakota Department of Health your child has tested positive for COVID-19, which requires Isolation from school or your child is a confirmed Close Contact, which requires Quarantine. In either case please notify your child's principal immediately, as you most likely will know this information prior to the school.
Please also indicate if the positive case or close contact was due to a possible exposure at school. This will allow for a much quicker mitigation and tracing process for the safety of your child, as well as other children and staff in the school.
