Last week the Ecology students completed a hands-on lab titled “Respiration Leads to Perspiration”—and it was both educational and a lot of fun! During this activity, students investigated how exercise affects the amount of carbon dioxide we exhale. After doing short bursts of exercise ( running in place), they exhaled into a beaker containing a chemical indicator that changed color in the presence of CO₂. Students timed how long it took the solution to change color before and after exercising. This experiment helped students understand how the body’s cells work harder during physical activity, using more oxygen and producing more carbon dioxide. It’s the same science behind why we breathe harder during sports, workouts, or any physical exertion—making this lab a perfect bridge between classroom learning and everyday life. My students loved this interactive experience, and the lab definitely brought cellular respiration to life!

Congratulations to all participants in our local middle school science fair!

The Structured Learning Center students took all of their life skills to practice to purchase and wrap gifts for the Angel Tree. 18 Angel tree tags! They were able to celebrate their hard work with their own ordered & bought meal at Applebees!

4th grade science experimented with flashlights and mirrors to see how light travels and how it reflects.

Today our 4th and 5th graders had an exciting opportunity to explore future careers! We welcomed presenters from the University of South Dakota to share firsthand experiences from six different health science careers: Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Public Health/Health Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Biology/Pre-Med, and Social Work.
We’re thrilled to bring real-world career exploration directly to our students and help them imagine the possibilities ahead!

On Monday, the 5th graders had a guest speaker, Jen Hovland, who taught them about the history of the United States flag, how to properly display it, and how to fold it correctly. All the students were able to take a turn at folding. The students all learned what it means to respect our nation's flag.
